Put on Your Best Smile: Lipsticks to Make Your Teeth Look Whiter

Updated October 1, 2020

Who doesn’t want a brighter looking smile? And we’re not talking about charcoal toothpaste and whitening systems you see your favorite influencers advertising. If you’re an avid coffee or tea drinker you’re more susceptible to staining, but can you really choose between your teeth and coffee on a Monday morning? We can't! So, we think we can help with lipstick. Think of it as color correcting for your teeth. We'll help you pick shades that contrast, and therefore neutralize, instead of emphasizing.

Warm-toned lipsticks will counteract cool-tones in teeth bringing out the unwanted yellow shade (a warm tone) while choosing a more cool-toned shade of lipstick will make your teeth appear whiter by counteracting the warm tones in your teeth. Pretty simple right?

When opting for a brown, orange or vampy shade, even neon colors, we can't help you there, these tones will generally make your teeth slightly more yellow. But you don't have to shy away from them.  Look for shades that have the words mauve, neutral, cool, gray, purple, or blue in the description when at all possible. What about pinks, purples, nudes, and reds? We’ve got you covered with what to look for when choosing your shade.

Likewise with pinks you want to find the most cool-toned (blue-based) undertone in the lipstick as opposed to yellow. Now shades will vary with your skin tone so pinks can be a bit tricky if cool tones don’t suit your skin, however, you can always opt for a more berry pink with more purple undertones that usually look good on all skin tones and will make your teeth look whiter than normal.

We recommend: Unzipped, Cancun, and St. Tropez

Darker shades will naturally have a more yellowing effect, but if you opt for a darker, vampy-purple that carries more pink than its usual brown undertone, it will help make your teeth look whiter.

We recommend: New Orleans, Bordeaux, Napa Valley, and Queens

Although most nudes tend to have a more peachy or brown undertones, you’re going to want to look for a more pinky-nude that is not too warm. Finding a whitening-nude can be a bit challenging but this will be your best bet for selecting your nude lippie.

We recommend: Sao Paulo, Nude Potion, and Angeles

Typically reds carry a more blue, pink or orange base. We’re definitely staying away from the orange based lippies because those will give you the most yellowing effect (not what we’re going for here!). A more pink base will keep you fairly neutral but a blue-based red lipstick will provide the best whitening effect.

We recommend: Atlantic City, Milan, Ultimate Red, Rendezvous, and Brickell
