Stay Hydrated.

Your skin needs water. Skin, our largest organ (thank you Bio class!), is made of 60% of it. Like most products, water is our first ingredient, and despite this fact, to keep our skin healthy we need to apply even more moisture to it.

Why do I need to moisturize?

Ironically, taking a shower depletes our skin of moisture. We have this this filmy layer on our skin (more Bio to come) called the hydrolipidic film. This layer contains sweat, oil, and water and is made to defend against bacteria and keep skin hydrated. But when you shower or wash your face you take a toll on your skin’s ability to protect itself. Skin should never be too dry or too oily. Both extremes cause havoc on your face. Just because you have oily skin, doesn’t mean you should skip this step completely. Otherwise, skin irritations such as acne for oily skin types and dry patches for dry skin types will begin to appear.

When should I apply my moisturizer?

Apply your moisturizer any time that you wash, shave or exfoliate, your face. Water and the cleansing of the skin remove oils that keep the skin soft and hydrated. Skin should still be slightly damp when applying moisturizer rather than completely dry. Are you doing a 10-step skincare routine? Apply your moisturizer as a final step, as it is normally the heaviest viscosity.

How often does one need to moisturize?

Most often you will have to moisturize twice daily: once in the morning and once in the evening. Depending on your routine it could possibly be more, including after a gym sesh, once you have cleansed and toned your skin.

Should I moisturize before applying makeup?

Always. The best kept not-so-secret about a flawless face, is that skin prep is just as important as the makeup that you apply. Spend as much time on your skin care as you do on your makeup and you will end up spending even less time to get ready. Before makeup, use a moisturizer that is going to set you up for the skin finish that you are looking for. Whether that’s matte, satin, or dewy, use a hydrator that will not work against your makeup routine.
